How
It All Came About
Recognizing the
importance of Group Legal Plans, Congress amended the Taft-Hartley Law of
1947 enabling legal services to be provided as a fringe benefit through
the collective bargaining process.
Endorsement of Group Legal
Plans by the AFL-CIO. (1975)
"The AFL-CIO recommends prepaid
legal services should be incorporated into the collective bargaining
programs of all affiliated national and international unions."
The
passage of ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Secuity Act of 1974)
contained a provision that encouraged uniform Federal supervision of Group
Legal Services and pre-empted employee benefit plans from regulation by
State agencies, including Bar Associations and Insurance
Departments.
Acceptance by the American Bar
Association
"Americans have come to view legal assistance as a
necessity, and probably the best way for the majority of Americans to be
able to assure themselves of legal assistance when they need it is through
prepaid plans."
--James Fellers, Former President The
American Bar Association
